For PlayStation 3 on the PlayStation 3, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'What is the difference between a dynamic theme and a regular one?' Dynamic themes are a great addition to any gamers’ PS3 experience. Unfortunately, most themes cost a few bucks, and you can’t be certain that you will like the theme until you use it. Instead of having to comb through every single theme on the store, PSLS have rooted out the best ones for you right here, both paid and free on PS+, along with video previews to let you see them in action.

When it comes to my PS3, personalization is the name of the game. I like to customize its appearance as much as possible with custom themes that reflect what I like and that set apart my PS3’s home screen from the rest.

Let’s take a look at two different ways in which you can install custom themes on your PS3: Downloading them from the web to you computer and getting them from the PSN.

Downloading Themes To your Mac or Windows PC

To do this, you will need a USB drive (formatted in the FAT32 format) to carry the theme over to your PS3.

Step 1: On your computer, open your web browser of choice and head to http://www.ps3-themes.com/. Alternatively, feel free to browse the web for any other site that offers a PS3 theme that you might like.

Step 2: Find a PS3 theme that you like, preview it and download it to your computer. Don’t be surprised by the strange file format (*.p3t), this is the default file format for all PS3 themes.

Step 3: Plug your USB drive (mentioned above) to your Mac or Windows PC. Click on it to open it and create a new folder within named PS3. Click on that folder to open it as well and create another folder inside named THEME.

Important Note: Make sure both folder names are all in uppercase, otherwise your PS3 will not recognize them.

Step 4: Copy the PS3 theme you just downloaded into the THEME folder that you just created. In the end it should look like the picture below.

Step 5: Turn your PS3 ON and plug the USB drive into it. From the XMB head to Settings and then scroll down and select Theme Settings. Once you do, select Theme and go all the way up on the side menu to select Install.

Step 6: Select your USB drive from the list of available sources. The themes you have on it should show up on the screen. Choose the one you want and install it.

Step 7: Once you do, head back to Settings > Theme Settings > Theme. You will now see the theme you just installed. Select it and Apply it.

Downloading Themes from the PS Store

When compared to searching and downloading themes from the web, downloading them from Sony’s PSN is far easier. However, the free themes available on the PSN are very limited in number and most of them try to advertise either a brand or a game. Nothing wrong about that, but it will definitely not appeal to many.

To get these themes, enter the PSN from your PS3’s home screen, go to Games and then head to PS3 Themes. Most of the themes there are paid, but you will also find a few free ones.

Alternatively, for more choices of themes, you could simply head to Search, look up your favorite game and it will most likely offer a free theme. Download it and exit the PSN.

After you do, repeat Step 7 above to apply your new theme.

And there you go, two different ways to achieve the same end. Of course, if you want to truly personalize your PS3, downloading themes from the web makes it far easier to do so. Enjoy your new themes!
